• In the summer found along lake shorelines and all wetland types in areas with thick plant cover.
  • In the spring or late fall observed in the outer edges of wetlands and in forested areas near wetlands.
  • Occasionally found in rocky areas with little vegetation.
  • Can be observed on roads and/or lawns near wetlands.
  • Pregnant females may seek out warm basking sites such as roads in July and August.
  • Little is currently known about its winter hibernating habitat. In general, snakes tend to hibernate within drier areas of a wetland, forested areas, rock piles, and/or building foundations.
There are information gaps in our knowledge of this species habitat use, range, and over-wintering sites. Researchers are currently studying the Ribbonsnake to further understand the needs of this species.
