Objectives Country Island The Brothers Sable Island Mahone Bay

The Brothers host Canada's largest Roseate Tern colony. Since 1983, when Roseate Terns were first seen on the Northern Brother, Ted D'Eon and volunteers have been monitoring the island.

At their peak in 2002, The Brothers were home to 90 Roseate Tern pairs. Partly due to three predation events in the following years, numbers have fallen and only 42 pairs were present in 2009.

Active management has benifited this colony. Nest boxes are provided, which offer a good nesting environment where chicks can hide easily. Mammal trapping and the destruction of gull nests help control predation.
